If you own a work attributed to Eduard Arranz-Bravo and want to know whether it is one, this is the way. You do not need to be in the art world to ask.
What to send
Write to ab@arranz-bravo.net with as much as you can gather. The more complete it arrives, the sooner we can tell you whether we will study it.
- A photograph of the front, complete, straight on, evenly lit and without reflections. Without the frame if it comes off safely.
- A photograph of the back, also complete. The back of a canvas usually says more than the front: stretcher, labels, stamps, inscriptions, traces of exhibitions.
- Details of the signature, of the date if there is one, and of any inscription or label.
- Exact dimensions in centimetres, height by width, and the medium and support if you know them.
- Provenance: how it came into your hands and everything you know from before. Invoices, receipts, correspondence, catalogues. Even if it is incomplete.
Good phone photographs are enough for a first assessment. You do not need professional photography to start.
What happens next
We confirm that we have received your enquiry and tell you whether what you have sent lets us study it, or whether something is missing.
The study cross-checks the piece against the Estate archive: the inventory, exhibition records, correspondence and the family’s own memory. Where there is doubt, we ask to see the work in person.
The result is communicated to you in writing, whatever it is.
What the Estate does and does not do
Yes
- Give a reasoned opinion on authorship.
- Place the work in the catalogue once authorship is established.
- Add the documentation you provide to the archive.
- Tell you that we do not know, when we do not know.
No
- Appraise the work or give any market value.
- Take part in a purchase, a sale or an auction.
- Recommend galleries, appraisers or restorers.
- Carry out laboratory analysis of materials.
An opinion on authorship is not an appraisal and cannot be used as one. They are two different jobs, done by different people.
